The advantage in going to the [MFA] program so late was that by then I had developed a pattern of discipline when it came to learning. I knew what could be gained by committing oneself in a very serious way.
Writing poetry allows me to invent games I can play anywhere and anytime. And that prevents boredom—a state I find corrosive. Of course I have to invent ever more difficult games, since I already know the solutions to the ones I just played.
